Breathwork uses controlled breathing techniques that influence the body’s physiology and regulates the nervous system. Changes in breathing rhythm, depth, and volume directly affect heart rate, circulation, and autonomic nervous system activity. Guided breathing techniques can help shift the nervous system away from stress and toward relaxation, recovery, and regulation.
Breathwork works by influencing the body’s respiratory chemistry and the autonomic nervous system. The way we breathe affects levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood which impacts the balance between sympathetic activation (associated with stress and alertness) and parasympathetic activity (associated with relaxation and recovery). By intentionally changing the way we breathe we can help regulate the nervous system and improve how the body responds to stress. Breathwork increases awareness of habitual breathing patterns, improves respiratory efficiency, and supports better physical movement.
Because breathing is one of the few physiological processes that is both automatic and under voluntary control, it provides a practical way to influence both physical and mental states. Through regular practice, many people experience improvements in focus, emotional regulation, sleep quality, exercise performance, and overall resilience to stress.
